LIVE FROM NEW YORK CITY. AND YOU’RE WATCHING THE RUNDOWN. A BIG SHOUT OUT TO THE CHEERLEADERS FROM COBRA HIGH SCHOOL. THEY, ALONG WITH GODDARD AND LOS LUNAS HIGH SCHOOL’S, PARTICIPATED IN THIS WEEK’S MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE IN NEW YORK CITY. WHAT A WAY TO GET US STARTED. THIS FRIDAY NIGHT, THE COBRA INDIAN CHEERLEADERS, LIKE I JUST SAID, WERE IN NEW YORK CITY CITY EARLIER THIS WEEK ALONGSIDE OTHER SCHOOLS. CONGRATS TO BOTH OF THOSE. AND WE MOVE ON NOW TO FOOTBALL TIME. WELCOME IN. I’M BETHANY MILLER. IT IS CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND. EIGHT TEAMS WILL TAKE THE FIELD, BUT ONLY FOUR WILL BE ABLE TO WRITE THEMSELVES INTO NEW MEXICO STATE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GLORY. TONIGHT IS OUR LAST SHOW OF THE SEASON. WE’RE GOING TO PREPARE YOU FOR ALL THE MATCHUPS AND WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW COME KICKOFF TOMORROW AFTERNOON. SO LET’S JUMP RIGHT IN WITH CLASS THREE A THE NUMBER ONE OVERALL SEED, SAINT MIKE’S HORSEMEN, TAKING ON THE NUMBER TWO SEED AND RIVAL ROBERTSON CARDINALS FOR THE HORSEMEN. THIS IS THEIR THIRD STRAIGHT TRIP TO THE TITLE GAME LAST YEAR, LOSING TO THE RUIDOSO WARRIORS. FOR THE CARDINALS, IT’S THEIR SECOND TRIP IN THE LAST THREE YEARS. LAST TIME, THE CARDINALS WON IT ALL WAS AGAINST THEIR RIVAL, SAINT MIKE’S TWO YEARS AGO. SOUNDS FAMILIAR. WE SPOKE WITH HEAD COACH JOEY FERNANDEZ OF THE HORSEMEN ABOUT THIS BITTER RIVALRY AND HOW IT PLAYS A PART. THIS SATURDAY. ANYTIME THAT YOU PLAY THEM FOR A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, IT’S ALWAYS GOING TO BE HIGH ENERGY. AND YOU KNOW, BOTH BOTH CITIES ARE GOING TO BE BACK IN THEIR TEAM. WE WANT TO BE THE MORE COMPETITIVE TEAM, BUT WE KNOW THEY’RE GOING TO BE COMPETITIVE. SO, UM, YOU KNOW, FOR US TO TO HOLD THAT BLUE TROPHY, IT’S GOING TO BE A GAME. WELL, WE REACHED OUT TO THE HEAD COACH OF ROBERTSON BUT DID NOT HEAR BACK THERE, OF COURSE, LOOKING TO GRAB THEIR SECOND TITLE IN THREE YEARS AS WELL. I AM HERE WITH, OF COURSE, YOU’VE READ HIS ARTICLES, BUT HERE’S THE FACE TO THE WORDS PREP SPORTS EDITOR FOR THE ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL, JAMES YODICE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE. THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME, BETHANY. WELL, LAST TIME THESE TWO TEAMS MATCHED UP, OF COURSE, SAINT MIKE’S WAS THE WINNER, 21, NOTHING, A SHUTOUT. WHAT DID YOU GET FROM THAT GAME? AND DO YOU EXPECT A SHUTOUT LIKE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME? I WOULD EXPECT A LOW SCORING GAME, SURE. NOW, OF COURSE, SAINT MIKE’S AND ROBERTSON HAVE A TREMENDOUS THREE-A RIVALRY. YOU CAN MAKE A CASE THAT IT’S MAYBE THE BEST THREE A RIVALRY IN NEW MEXICO. FIRST OF ALL, WE SHOULD SAY BOTH DEFENSES IN THIS GAME HAVE BEEN EXCELLENT ALL YEAR. ROBERTSON’S, I THINK, GIVES UP LESS THAN TEN A GAME. SAINT MIKE’S HAS BEEN VERY STRONG ALL YEAR. SO WE’VE GOT TWO REALLY GOOD DEFENSES. I LIKE SAINT MIKE’S BALANCE A LITTLE BIT MORE OFFENSIVELY. LEE ROBERTSON HAS A TERRIFIC QUARTERBACK, JESSE JAMES GONZALES, WHO IS ALSO THEIR LEADING RUSHER. A LOT OF THE ONUS IS GOING TO BE ON HIM TO MOVE THIS OFFENSE AGAINST A REALLY STINGY SAINT MIKE’S DEFENSE, ESPECIALLY GIVEN THAT THEY DIDN’T SCORE IN THE FIRST GAME. SO THAT’S THE BIG THING FOR ME. KEN ROBERTSON, FIND ENOUGH BALANCE AND MOVE THE CHAINS AND AND FIND A WAY TO STAY IN THIS GAME AND HAVE SOME SUCCESS AGAINST THAT. SAINT MIKE’S DEFENSE. YOU THINK THERE’S A LITTLE BIT OF A CHIP ON THE HORSEMEN SHOULDER FROM LAST YEAR’S RUNNER UP FINISH? ALWAYS FOR SAINT MIKE’S LAST YEAR. YOU KNOW, IT BURNED SAINT MIKE’S IS A IS A STORIED FOOTBALL PROGRAM AND OF COURSE ROBERTSON FOR THEM PLAYING THEM YOU KNOW SEVEN WEEKS AGO SAINT MIKE’S LOSING IN THE FINAL YEAH BOTH TEAMS I THINK HAVE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF INCENTIVE ON SATURDAY WAR OF COURSE MORE FROM JAMES COMING UP LATER IN THE SHOW. MOVING NOW TO CLASS FOUR, A FOUR SEED, PORTALES HOSTING TWO SEED LOVINGTON IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME TOMORROW. THE WILDCATS COME INTO THE MATCHUP WINNERS OF FIVE STRAIGHT AGAINST THEIR DISTRICT RIVAL OPPONENT. THE LAST WIN BACK IN OCTOBER. LOVINGTON THE WINNERS 2921. BUT THE RAMS ARE NO UNDERDOGS IN THIS MATCHUP. BOTH HEAD COACHES SPOKE TO US ABOUT THE REMATCH IN A CHAMPIONSHIP ATMOSPHERE. A LOT OF CHAMPIONSHIPS HAVE BEEN WON FOR LOVINGTON AND SO, YOU KNOW, FOR OUR KIDS TO GO BE IN THAT OPPORTUNE UNITY ON SATURDAY, UM, AND THEY WANT TO GO OUT THERE AND PLAY FOR THE ONES THAT HAVE COME BEFORE THEM. I THINK THAT BOTH TEAMS ARE GOOD. I THINK HAVING IT AT HOME IS SPECIAL FOR US AND OF COURSE WE’RE GOING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF, OF, YOU KNOW, PLAYING AT HOME. WELL, DURING THE SEASON, THE PORTALES RAMS DEFENSE HAD SEVEN SHUT OUTS. THE FOUR SEED COMES IN WITH AN OVERALL RECORD OF 11 AND ONE THEIR ONLY LOSS, OF COURSE, COMING TO THEIR CHAMPIONSHIP OPPONENT. ALL RIGHT. TWO CLASS FOUR A NOW WE’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THIS LOVINGTON PORTALES MATCHUP I MENTIONED EARLIER. WE WERE TALKING I SAID THE DARK HORSE, THE RAMS. YOU DON’T AGREE? WHY IS THAT? NO, LOOK, PORTALES WAS NINE AND ZERO WHEN THEY PLAYED LOVINGTON IN THE LAST GAME OF THE REGULAR SEASON. PORTALES WAS VERY MUCH IN LINE AND IN COMPETITION FOR A NUMBER ONE SEED IN THESE PLAYOFFS. SO NO, I DON’T THINK IF PORTALES IS A DARK HORSE, THESE TWO, OF COURSE, ARE DISTRICT RIVALS. THEY HAVE AN INTENSE RIVALRY. LOVINGTON IS ONE OF THOSE DEFENSES. THEY’RE GOING TO GIVE UP POINTS AND PORTALES HAS AN OFFENSE LED BY PAXTON CULPEPPER, THEIR JUNIOR QUARTERBACK WHO’S FANTASTIC. HE’S GOT GREAT WEAPONS IN THE PASS GAME. THIS TEAM CAN THROW THE BALL AND THEY WILL HAVE SUCCESS IN PORTALES. JUST FIND A WAY TO MAKE THE BIG PLAYS IN THE SECOND HALF. I THINK THAT’S WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO. LOVINGTON’S OFFENSE IS IS PRETTY DIVERSE. THEY’VE GOT A REALLY GOOD QUARTERBACK THEMSELVES. WYATT GOMEZ, WHO THREW FIVE TOUCHDOWN PASSES LAST WEEK IN THE SEMI FINALS AGAINST SILVER PORTALES, HAS THE DEFENSE TO WIN THIS THING, BUT THEY’VE GOT TO FIND A WAY TO GET OFF THE FIELD. THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DO THAT IN THE PLAYOFFS LAST YEAR. THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DO THAT AT THE END OF THE REGULAR SEASON THIS YEAR. SO THEY’VE GOT TO FIND A WAY TO GET OFF THE FIELD AND GIVE THEIR QUARTERBACK A CHANCE BECAUSE PAXTON CULPEPPER IS A GUY YOU’D LOVE TO HAVE AT QUARTERBACK IN A TWO MINUTE DRILL. I THINK BOTH THESE TEAMS FEEL CONFIDENT IF THEY GET INTO A FOURTH QUARTER GAME, THEY HAVE THE OFFENSE, THEY HAVE THE EXPERIENCE, THEY HAVE THE QUARTERBACK. MOST IMPORTANTLY TO TO FIND A WAY TO WIN THIS GAME. WELL, WE CANNOT WAIT FOR THAT BATTLE. BUT LET US MOVE NOW TO CLASS FIVE A, WHERE TWO OF ARGUABLY THE BEST TEAMS IN THE STATE, REGARDLESS OF CLASS, WILL GO HEAD TO HEAD. CONTINUING THE STORIED RIVALRY BETWEEN THE TWO NUMBER ONE SEED, ROSWELL, TAKING ON THE REIGNING STATE CHAMPS, THE ARTESIA BULLDOGS. NOW FANS IN THE WOOL BOWL GAVE THE COYOTES AN EDGE IN A COMMANDING 29 EIGHT WIN OVER THE BULLDOGS BACK IN OCTOBER. THIS TIME AROUND, ARTESIA WILL BE HOSTING THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. AND WHILE THE BULLDOGS ARE THINKING REVENGE, THE COYOTES KNOW IT’S A WHOLE DIFFERENT BALLGAME. I THINK IT’S GOING TO BE REAL IMPORTANT FOR US TO TO KIND OF, YOU KNOW, HAVE A GOOD FIRST QUARTER AND KIND OF SEE WHAT THE ADJUSTMENTS IN ARE ON THE ON ON THEIR END ARE AND AND SEE IF WE CAN KIND OF ADJUST TO THOSE THINGS ON THE FLY DURING THE GAME. I THINK, YOU KNOW, HAVING THE CROWD BEHIND US AND AND JUST WORKING ON SOME WAYS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE FINISH SOME OF THESE DRIVES AND DON’T LEAVE POINTS OFF THE BOARD IS GOING TO BE KEY TO A VICTORY. AND WE’RE EXCITED TO GET TO PLAY THEM AGAIN AND HOPEFULLY PLAY A LITTLE BIT BETTER FOOTBALL THIS TIME. WELL, IF THEY DO, ARTESIA WOULD WIN THE PROGRAM’S 32ND STATE TITLE IN PROGRAM HISTORY. ROSWELL WILL LOOK TO BRING HOME THE BLUE TROPHY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2019, WHEN I KNOW THAT I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS GAME. YOU AND I BOTH WILL BE THERE TO COVER IT IN PERSON. VERY EXCITED FOR MY FIRST TRIP TO THE BULLDOG BOWL. OF COURSE I’M EXCITED FOR YOU. YEAH, THERE IS NOTHING. SO ELECTRIC AND SPECIAL AS BULLDOG BOWL IN ARTESIA ON CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY. I’M EXCITED YOU’LL GET TO EXPERIENCE THAT FOR THE FIRST TIME. I WANT TO TALK ABOUT ARTESIA, THE REIGNING STATE CHAMPS COMING INTO THIS ONE. THEY DID NOT SCORE AN OFFENSIVE TOUCHDOWN AGAINST ROSWELL WHEN THEY PLAYED THEM BACK IN THE REGULAR SEASON. DO YOU THINK THAT IS FUELING THIS BULLDOGS OFFENSE, THIS ENTIRE TEAM TO SHOW OUT ON SATURDAY? MOST CERTAINLY. I WAS AT THE FIRST ARTESIA ROSWELL GAME, WHICH WAS OCTOBER 13TH DOWN IN ROSWELL. ARTESIA DID NOT HAVE TROUBLE MOVING THE BALL. IT WAS FINISHING DRIVES. THAT WAS THE REAL PROBLEM. THEY HAD TWO DRIVES GET TURNED OVER ON DOWNS INSIDE THE ROSWELL TEN. THEY HAD ANOTHER DRIVE. I THINK INSIDE THE 25 THAT STALLED ON DOWNS. BUT ROSWELL’S DEFENSE HAS BEEN TREMENDOUS THE WHOLE YEAR, AS GOOD AS ANY DEFENSE OUTSIDE OF PROBABLY CLEVELAND’S. YOU’VE GOT YOU’VE GOT A ROSWELL TEAM THAT’S GOT PLAYMAKERS ALL OVER THE FIELD AND THEY WILL GIVE UP SOME PLAYS. BUT I KNOW FOR ARTESIA, WHEN THEY COME IN TO THIS GAME ON SATURDAY, THE BIG THING IS GOING TO BE WE’VE GOT TO FINISH WHEN WE HAVE A CHANCE TO FINISH DRIVES, WE HAVE GOT TO FINISH AGAINST THIS TEAM. THESE TEAMS ARE VERY EVENLY MATCHED. I THINK ARTESIA FOR SURE IS GOING TO COME OUT AND PLAY MUCH BETTER OFFENSIVELY ON SATURDAY. THE QUESTION IS, WILL THIS ROSWELL DEFENSE HOLD UP FOR 48 MORE MINUTES AND THEY HAVE SO FAR NOW THEY’VE GOT FOUR MORE QUARTERS TO SHOW THEMSELVES. THAT ONE’S EXCITING. WELL, FINALLY, TO CLASS SIX A NOW, WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF ON SATURDAY? LAST SEASON, THE BEARS AND THE STORM PRODUCED THE HIGHEST SCORING 11 MAN STATE FINAL IN NEW MEXICO HISTORY. THIS YEAR. BOTH TEAMS HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVE. HERE’S REPORTER JULIAN PETTIS. THIS IS ALL WE OVER WANTED. YOU KNOW, WE’RE EXCITED. EVERYBODY HERE. THE ENERGY IS UP. THIS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WILL BE A REPEAT OF LAST YEAR’S RECORD, SETTING 75 TO 61 WIN BY CLEVELAND HEAD COACH ROB GARZA SAYS IT’S GREAT TO BE IN THIS POSITION AGAIN, BUT THE SEASON HAS BEEN FULL OF UPS AND DOWNS. WE’VE BATTLED THROUGH A LOT OF THINGS THIS YEAR, INJURIES. WE’VE TAKEN OUR LUMPS, WE’VE HAD A FEW LOSSES. BUT, YOU KNOW, I FEEL LIKE WE’VE GROWN TOGETHER AS A TEAM. PLAYERS SAY WEARING THE STORM’S JERSEY COMES WITH PRIDE AND EXPECTATIONS. EVERYBODY, THEY COME OUT HERE, THEY KNOW WHAT TO DO. THEY KNOW WHAT THE EXPECTATION. THEY KNOW. THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT IS. LA CUEVA SAYS THEY HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVE AFTER LAST YEAR’S LOSS, THE BEARS STARTING QUARTERBACK CAMERON DYER SAYS THE START OF THE SEASON DIDN’T PAN OUT THE WAY THEY WANTED. HAVING THAT EARLY START AND HAVING THAT, YOU KNOW, NOT SO GOOD TASTE IN OUR MOUTH, YOU KNOW, HELPED US OVERCOME WHAT WE NEEDED TO OVERCOME. AND NOW THEY FIND THEMSELVES WITH ANOTHER CHANCE TO BECOME CHAMPIONS. HEAD COACH BRANDON BECK HAS HIGH PRAISE FOR HIS TEAM AND THE WORK THEY’VE SHOWED THIS SEASON. THEY’RE HARD WORKERS. THEY’RE GRINDERS. THEY’RE A GREAT JOY TO BE AROUND. YOU KNOW, MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY IS JUST AS EXCITING AS FRIDAY FOR US. BUT NOW IT COMES DOWN TO TOMORROW FOR KOAT SPORTS, I’M JULIAN POTTER. SUPPORTING IT IS OUR FINAL DISCUSSION OF THE NIGHT. THE BIG DOGS IN CLASS SIX A NOW WE’VE SEEN THIS REMATCH BEFORE. WE SAW IT IN THE REGULAR SEASON. WE SAW IT IN LAST YEAR’S STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. THESE TWO TEAMS ALWAYS DELIVER THREE SEED LA CUEVA COMING IN, ONE SEED. CLEVELAND, OF COURSE, THEIR DYNASTY CONTINUING ON, TRYING TO FINISH IT OUT HERE AFTER A FEW LOSSES AT THE START OF THE REGULAR SEASON. I FEEL LIKE BOTH OF THESE TEAMS ARE PLAYING THEIR BEST FOOTBALL EXACTLY WHEN THEY WANTED TO. LAST YEAR’S STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, THE HIGHEST SCORING 11 MAN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN HISTORY. DO YOU EXPECT A SHOOTOUT LIKE THAT AGAIN THIS YEAR? NO, NO, NO, NO. I DON’T THINK WE’LL SEE ANYTHING NEAR THAT. LET’S PUT IT THIS WAY. CLEVELAND HAS DOMINATED ALL OF ITS TOP NEW MEXICO OPPONENTS DEFENSIVELY, ALL OF THEM. YOU HAVE THIS OFFENSE WHICH HAS BEEN UNSTOPPABLE. AND THIS DEFENSE, WHICH HAS BEEN IMMUNE ABLE. HOW MUCH SUCCESS CAN LA CUEVA HAVE AGAINST THIS CLEVELAND DEFENSE? LA CUEVA’S DEFENSE CAN BE SCORED ON. YOU KNOW, WE’VE SEEN THAT TIME AND AGAIN. IT’S NOT A GREAT DEFENSE. IT’S A GOOD DEFENSE. A HARRISON BUHA THE CLEVELAND RUNNING BACK. HE HAD FOUR TOUCHDOWNS FOR CLEVELAND LAST YEAR IN THE FINALS. IF YOU’RE CLEVELAND, I’M GOING TO RUN THE BALL AT YOU. I’M GOING TO KEEP THAT LA CUEVA OFFENSE PINNED AS MUCH AS I CAN. I THINK CLEVELAND SAYS, HEY, IF YOU CAN OUTSCORE US MORE POWER TO YOU CAN. CAN LA CUEVA FIND A WAY TO BREAK THROUGH NOT JUST PHYSICALLY BUT PSYCHOLOGICALLY GET SOME EARLY SUCCESS? THAT WOULD BE A KEY. I THINK IF LA CUEVA CAN GO OUT AND PUT UP AN EARLY TOUCHDOWN SOMEWHERE, MAYBE THIS CHANGES THE WHOLE TONE OF THE GAME AND THAT LA CUEVA OFFENSE FEELS A LITTLE BIT MORE COMFORTED. WELL, COMING UP NEXT ON THE RUNDOWN, CAN THE LOBO FOOTBALL TEAM END THE SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE? THERE’S A THRILLING END TO THIS ONE. I’VE GOT THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR YOU NEXTNOW KOAT SEVEN SPORTS SPONSO BY ISLETA RESORT AND CASINO. WELCOME BACK TO THE RUNDOWN. HE BECAME THE FIRST LOBO IN HISTORY TODAY TO RUSH FOR OVER 200 YARDS IN BACK TO BACK GAMES. HE WINS THE GAME FOR UTAH STATE, IT WAS WILLIAMS FIRST CAREER START AS HE LED THE AGGIES TO A 4441 OVERTIME WIN OVER THE LOBOS THAT CLINCHED OF COURSE, A BOWL BERTH.
